Precious

Although everyone in the country sounds like they are seeing New Moon in it's record shattering opening weekend, we decided we actually wanted to see a good movie so we checked out Precious. It's a movie that we've wanted to see for some time and it's getting justifiably rave reviews. The movie was powerful, gritty and terribly sad. It's not the kind of movie I need to see again but I am definitely glad I saw it once. The film is crushingly sad in it's realism of a life lived under terrible conditions.

The performances by newcomer Gabourey Sidibe and comedian Mo'Nique are incredible and Oscar-worthy. Both convey intense, gut-wrenching emotion and the violent scenes between them are terrifying to watch. Their emotional, tear-jerking scenes are just plain impressive. Paula Patton and even Mariah Carey turn in fantastic performances too. Sometimes the movies are not about escape. Instead, they make you realize how very blessed you are to be given the childhood and parents you have. Precious is definitely that kind of movie.
