DADT Repealed

As crazy as it sounds, there was a moment of sanity in Washington today as the Senate voted to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' basically assuring that gay people will no longer have to lie about who they are to defend their country (sadly, a country that still doesn't think they deserve equal rights). I'm really happy this finally passed only in that it's another encouraging step toward full equal rights for all Americans.

I'm so happy for any gay serviceman and woman that now can serve with pride and dignity. That they can perform a job they love without having to worry that the skill in which they execute their duties, and the passion they have for defending freedom and democracy can no longer be trumped by their sexual orientation (something that has no bearing on their job). Gays have been serving in the military for as long as there has been a military and usually the people they serve with already know are gay. Once again, John McCain is not just on the wrong side of history, but he continues to be vocal about it. Why anyone wants to be vocal about denying equal rights is beyond me. The military he served in is gone. The vast majority of servicemen and women support repeal. The heads of the military support it. Eighty percent of Americans support it. The President supports it. And now, finally, the majority of the men and women that supposedly represent us in Washington actually decided to listen to the rest of us! Congratulations common sense! It was a rare and wonderful day for you.
