I just read that the Twins signed a one-year, $1.5 million, incentive laden contract with Jim Thome. It's quite a bargain pickup (considering he got paid $13 million last season). I think it's a nice move and only bolsters what is becoming quite a potent power-hitting lineup for the Twins. At the very least it puts a massive home run hitter (who has hit more home runs against the Twins than any other team) out of the White Sox lineup. I'm excited about baseball coming back and hopefully the Twins will make some waves in their new stadium this year :)
Tonight was the final night of The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien. I'll admit, I saw hardly any of his shows. I'm a Letterman fan. But I like Conan. He seems like the happiest, most genuinely grateful man who loved what he did. He had finally reached his dream job. The only problem was, his predecessor is a classless man who decided he didn't want to leave. And he sabotaged Conan's show by staying on the same network, moving his show up, and taking all his viewers with him. Conan was destined to fail. Jay failed too. But his reward is forcing Conan out so he can take back the show he promised he'd give up five years earlier. Yes, there are far more important things going on in the world. And I'd gladly take 30+ million dollars to leave my job (I don't care how much you like your job. It's $33 million!!) So Conan will be fine. And he knows that too. It's just sad to see the bad guy win. It's sad to see the far superior talent forced to leave. No more Conan. No more Triumph. No more Walker, Texas Ranger Lever. See ya Conan.
I loved staying out with my friends, biking around, swimming, sledding, going camping with my family, eating dinner at the table each night with them, and reading. There was no internet, I didn't play video games, didn't have a cell phone, and you know what? I really liked my childhood. I worry about how hard it must be to keep kids off all of this media. Sure, I watched TV and we went to movies. But there are so many ways for kids to not communicate face to face with people now. And it does affect them. And it is a bad thing. Technology is supposed to make our lives easier. But I think in many ways it makes it more complicated.
Don't get me wrong, I walked through old shacks from the late 1800s in Florida earlier this month and I thanked the Lord I didn't grow up then. But I do think there is a balance... and I honestly wouldn't want to be a kid growing up now either.
It never ceases to amaze me that Conservatives & Christians (usually the same group) are so outspoken in judgement & condemnation of others, especially in times of need. Pat Robertson has been no stranger to controversy, making the most outlandish, embarrassing and divisive statements through the years, and sadly, it's all done 'in God's name.' Let me tell you, I think God would like to distance Himself from Robertson as much as possible. The other day, on his program, Robertson claimed that the earthquake in Haiti was retribution for a pact they made with the devil! “They said, ‘We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.’ True story,” Robertson said. “And so, the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal.’“ Umm, for real??!? That is a sane statement? And then windbag de jure, Rush Limbaugh, chimes in and decides to politicize the death of thousands and the living hell of millions more urging his listeners not to donate money to the relief effort charging that the Democrats will “use this to burnish their, shall we say, credibility with the black community, both the light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country,” calling it “made to order for them.” For real? Are conservatives really proud to have these men speak for them? It's ignorance and hate speech of the very highest order. And I just don't get how God continually gets used to hurt people. What rational person's heart doesn't break watching the horrific coverage of these helpless people fighting for their lives? It simply goes against human nature. Robertson and Limbaugh are monsters and if I was a Conservative/Republican I would feel ashamed (of course, I'd feel ashamed for a whole host of other things too, haha). I guess that's the beauty of being conservative. All of the judgement without any of that pesky guilt!
It's just stunning that any emotion but sympathy could be conjured with this earthquake. Politicizing this issue and demonizing these people at this nearly unprecedented time of need is unforgivable.
Update: Just came across this letter in response to Pat Robertson's comments. It's very funny... and very smart (something Pat could work on):
Dear Pat Robertson, I know that you know that all press is good press, so I appreciate the shout-out. And you make God look like a big mean bully who kicks people when they are down, so I'm all over that action. But when you say that Haiti has made a pact with me, it is totally humiliating. I may be evil incarnate, but I'm no welcher. The way you put it, making a deal with me leaves folks desperate and impoverished. Sure, in the afterlife, but when I strike bargains with people, they first get something here on earth -- glamour, beauty, talent, wealth, fame, glory, a golden fiddle. Those Haitians have nothing, and I mean nothing. And that was before the earthquake. Haven't you seen "Crossroads"? Or "Damn Yankees"? If I had a thing going with Haiti, there'd be lots of banks, skyscrapers, SUVs, exclusive night clubs, Botox -- that kind of thing. An 80 percent poverty rate is so not my style. Nothing against it -- I'm just saying: Not how I roll. You're doing great work, Pat, and I don't want to clip your wings -- just, come on, you're making me look bad. And not the good kind of bad. Keep blaming God. That's working. But leave me out of it, please. Or we may need to renegotiate your own contract. Best, Satan

After I uploaded my latest blog post I saw the date: January 14. And I immediately remembered that today was the day my grandpa died. I was really young when it happened but it was my first real experience losing someone I loved. It's odd how much I remember about that day even though I was only ten years old. My grandpa was a quiet man. He was a farmer. He had an incredible work ethic. He loved his garden and for some reason I remember that he always cut all the corn off his corn on the cob before he ate it. He died suddenly, suffering a heart attack when he and my grandma got home from counting offering money at church as they did every Monday morning. Funny how certain days stand out in your life. For me, January 14 will always be the day my grandpa died.
Watching the coverage of this earthquake is just heartbreaking. No electricity, no food, no water, no stores open, dead bodies everywhere, people living and sleeping outside too scared to go back in buildings that weren't destroyed for fear an aftershock will bring it down, no earth moving equipment to help in rescuing trapped people... it's insane and it's just so sad. I can't even imagine.
How the man thought he could get away with the response "I wouldn't know" when asked why Palin was not vetted properly is ridiculous! You were the presidential nominee! That choice sunk his listing campaign. He'd have never won regardless of who he picked, but if he was even a little honest, he has to admit that was poorly executed. I'm so sick of politicians not answering the questions they are asked.
The last few days have been musical chairs on TV. David Hasselhoff leaves America's Got Talent which seems crazy. Who else is gonna hire him? lol. I don't watch the show but it sounds like it will get even more unwatchable with his replacement: Howie "Never Been Funny" Mandell. Jay Leno finally got his show canned. Hard to do comedy that more than a few million humorless Americans will watch. So he's getting shipped back to 11:35 and poor Conan, who had to wait five years to finally take over The Tonight Show gets jerked around some more. I feel for the guy. He's the only funny one of the bunch. On a lesser known note, Erica Hill left Anderson Cooper 360. I really liked their banter together.
Today Simon Cowell confirmed that he will leave American Idol to launch The X Factor here. Again, I don't watch AI but it's interesting news. I'm not sure the show will survive without him. And now Sarah Palin gets hired by the only network dumb enough to want to hear her talk: Fox News. It's a natural fit. Here quote about being hired is pure comedy: "It’s wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news." Maybe she should go into comedy writing? Good Lord.
‘It’s wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news’
I hadn't seen an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in some time. As much as I love the premise of the show and the reaction of the people when they see their incredible new homes, I find it hard to stomach Ty Pennington's spazzy, manic yelling and then whiplash, soft-spoken, barfy, whispery segments about how he's changing lives. I've always disliked the product placement and name drops of companies donating their items to the show but it was a sad but necessary thing in getting these deserving families a new home. But after tonight? Wow! They aren't even pretending to be subtle anymore. Logo shots on every single item in the house before the reveal. It made me sick. No major corporation in this country donates their money and products without needing everyone in the world to know it was them who did it. It's certainly not because they care. They just want the publicity. I always knew that, it's just hard to see it be done so conspicuously and blatantly. It's so shameless.
In the end it gives these families a far better life (assuming they can pay for it), but it feels empty knowing these companies want everyone to know did it more for themselves than anyone else.
We caught Daybreakers tonight. Although some people are probably tiring of the vampire craze, it's actually one of the smarter vampire movies I've seen in some time. It has an interesting story, is visually arresting, was quite gory (one scene in particular was an orgy of gore that was (I think) purposefully comical), well acted and just enjoyable to watch once it got going. Apparently it was filmed two years ago (which makes sense now as the outbreak was referenced to 2009, which is now dated) but I'm glad it finally saw the light of day.
I doubt "embarrassing" is the first word that is supposed to come to mind when I saw this picture of Jake Gyllenhaal from his upcoming movie, Prince Of Persia. But it is.
I'm not sure how I had never heard about this building until last week (seeing as it's been under construction since 2004) but it is a frightening thing to see. Opening just this week, the Burj Khalifa Tower is over 1000 feet taller than the previous tallest building in the world, at 2,717 feet. It was originally planned to best that structure by 33 feet but those plans were revised as the building was being constructed (which seems like an awful idea to me!). Can this building really support all this extra weight? I guess it can, but man, seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Has shades of the Titanic written on it to me.
This building is 160 stories, 50 stories more than the Sears Tower in Chicago and has more square footage than any other building. Seeing it absolutely tower over the rest of Dubai is a strange sight. People are going to LIVE in this building. That would scare the crap out of me. In this day and age I can't imagine this building's height will be surpassed anytime soon. &1.5 billion dollars worth of vacant real estate, haha.
