Honorable mention: "Dancing On My Own" "Indestructible"
Mumford & Sons "Little Lion Man"
Folk rock at it's best. SO cool this song hit #1 at Alternative radio. Seeing it performed live was my live show highlight of the year too, the crowd drawing the band out for an encore by singing a line from the end of the song and then stomping on the floor of the stage to the beat of the music. It was truly transcendent. Fun driving these fellas around town too. Couldn't be nicer guys.
Honorable mention: "Sigh No More"
Goldfrapp "Rocket"
The #1 Dance Song of the year... and for good reason. I love the sound Goldfrapp crafted for their latest record, Head First. And this first single was an definite highlight. Entertaining video too!
Honorable mention: "Head First" "I Wanna Life"
Arcade Fire "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
The album this song comes from was universally praised as one of 2010''s finest. When you listen to this song it's easy to see why. Driving, soaring and ridiculously melodic. I just love it. And #1 as voted by Pitchfork readers too :)
Honorable Mention: "Rococo"
Kylie Minogue "Get Outta My Way"
This may seem like throwaway pop to many people but I couldn't care less. I love me some Kylie Minogue and her latest album, Aphrodite, was a lovely throwback to her earlier, hyper-melodic sound. This song got a lot of gym play on my
Honorable Mention: "All The Lovers" "Put Your Hands Up" "Too Much" "Can't Beat The Feeling"
Mika "Kick Ass"
I doubt Mika's flamboyant, unabashed pop will ever break through in the US. Women can make music like he does here but I think there is an underlying homophobia that will prevent him from every being mainstream in the . This song absolutely soars and has such an enormous hook! It's criminal that it wasn't a hit.
Cee-Lo "Fuck You"
I don't know anyone that doesn't like this song: catchy, spirited, tons of swearing.... what's not to like? It's been nominated for a slew of Grammy's and become a pop culture phenomenon. Just don't make me listen to the watered down version. Forget you? Lame.
Gaga was inescapable these last two years. Thank goodness the music she released on The Fame Monster made me not mind at all. The woman basically brought pop music back to Top 40 radio and it was a welcome thing after years of crunk and Nickelback. "Alejandro" is basically Ace Of Base for a new millenium and only
Honorable Mention: "Bad Romance" "Monster"
Two Door Cinema Club "Do You Want It All"
I saw these guys live in NYC this fall and absolutely loved them. Their Tourist History CD is solid from start to finish and has been landing at or near the top of a lot of UK 'best of' lists. This song was the one I played the most. Reminds me of Bloc Party at their best. I just love the vibe of this song. Great stuff.
Scissor Sisters "Invisible Light"
Like Mika, Scissor Sisters campy, openly gay, dance sound will always keep them underground here. Which is what it is. At least people who like fun music can still listen to it whenever they want to. This is an epic electronic jam complete with a spoken word section from Sir Ian McKellan.
Honorable Mention: "Any Which Way"
